TAHI
Moving from New Zealand to the USA as a teenager brought new challenges, adding to the typical struggles of adolescence. Amidst trying to fit into the American school scene, I often felt lost and disconnected. However, my sense of style remained a steadfast anchor. Raised in New Zealand, I embraced street fashion—graphic tees, shoe collecting—and with not a lot to spend, I focused on treasuring pieces that felt authentically 'me'.
Embracing my heritage through fashion not only helped me reclaim my identity but also connected me with like-minded individuals. Fashion, I discovered, bridges diverse backgrounds, a realization that drives my brand. 'Kotahitanga' and 'Tahi', Māori words for unity and oneness, embody this mission. As a Māori, Samoan in the USA, I aim to amplify underrepresented voices and cultures through fashion, empowering individuals to express themselves confidently and authentically.
That is why I chose to use the Ngutu Kura koru in my logo. This special pattern represents 'unity and connectivity' and that is my goal with creating this brand. I hope to bring more people together in sharing and accepting who we are truly.
